Sister Project In Nairobi, Kenya: Kukua Pamoja
ANKORS West is proud to house a sister project from Nairobi, Kenya, Kukua Pamoja (KP) - a project run by ANKORS Education and Prevention Coordinator, Jamie Makena MacBeth. The project currently offers comprehensive workshops for youth in a number of slum zones outside of Nairobi. Kukua Pamoja means "Growing Together" in Swahili, and it is this sentiment that is at the heart of all KP efforts. Presently, there are two main focuses of KP. The first is a young women's group operating in the Mailli Saba slum east of Nairobi, and focuses on issues of empowerment, education and creating income. It run by four young Kenyan women who offer weekly workshops on empowerment, HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, life skills trainings. There is a long term hope to create a nutrition feeding program in the slum that will employ young mothers, as well as help address the most vulnerable in the community- orphans, the disabled and the elderly.
Project 2
The second project is a young men's discussion group running in Kangemi slum, west of the city centre. This was a pilot project initiated in 2010, though MacBeth has been working with this group of young men since 2007 offering ghetto yoga clubs. This pilot was borne out of previous discussions with this group around violence and violence prevention. The goal of the group is two-fold:1.) to deepen critical analysis skills and offer information around the complex issues that most affect their lives and 2.) Reduce violence and counter violence.
Topics of study include: yoga and yoga philosophy, sexual and reproductive health education, HIV/AIDS, intro to harm reduction principles, gender issues, consent & healthy relationships, self-advocacy, violence and counter-violence, power, trauma, media, conflict resolution and masculinity studies.
Kukua Pamoja relies on private donations. ANKORS can provide charitable tax receipts for donations of $20 or more. Kukua Pamoja is always grateful for contributions to continue their important work.
